UltraSurf Firefox Plugin

UltraSurf is an excellent hide ip software that you can use to browse anonymously. It is one of the most apprecitated privacy tools available on the market, as you can see on our poll.

One of the few problems of UltraSurf is that when used it does not automatically change the proxy settings for Firefox. This means that it does not change your IP address when browsing with Firefox. You have to change these settings manually. Not very convenient, isn’t it?

To solve this problem, a Firefox add-on is available for download that does exactly this: changes the proxy settings when using UltraSurf. The plugin lets you enable and disable UltraSurf on the bottom bar of the browser. You still need to have UltraSurf program running, but at least you don’t have to change the proxy settings every time you want to use/ stop using it.

Here is what you have to do to make it work:

  1. Open Firefox
  2. Download the Firefox add-on
  3. Unzip the file
  4. Drag the wjbutton_en.xpi file to Firefox window
  5. Click the “Install” button in the pop-up window to install it.  The UltraSurf icon will show at the right-bottom of the firefox window.
  6. Close all firefox windows and re-open firefox.
  7. A grey-out UltraSurf icon means UltraSurf is disabled. Click it to enable/disable it.
  8. Start UltraSurf program and enable the Firefox add-on. If you don’t have UltraSurf installed, download the .exe file and run it.
  9. To change the settings or uninstall it, go to “tools/add-ons” of Firefox.

It’s that simple!

ULTRASURF IS CONFIRMED MALWARE. I would stay FAR FAR FAR away from it. It contains KNOWN malware, contains code to execute and attach to other processes, and on load US goes out and contacts a number of suspect sites w/o telling you, some being banks, some being govt sites.

Stick with TOR, or a paid service if you REALLY want to be safe. UltraSurf IS mining data and is executing things in the background and could potentially be a serious hazard to you and your privacy.

Google ultrasurf + malware to find further proof.

How could it be a malware when you don’t even have to install it?! It’s just a .exe file that you launch everytime you want to surf anonymously. I tried a couple IP hiders before, but once I tried UltraSurf I never looked elsewhere. What an awesome little gem.

The only hiccups : once activated, the connection becomes slower. But I guess this happens with all other privacy programs. Also it’s not compatible with Google Chrome, but that’s not a big problem.

The Firefox kludge is no longer necessary. Recent releases of FF have a new proxy setting: Use system proxy setting.

When this option is checked, FF will work with Ultrasurf (or any similar proxy service) the same way IE and Chrome do.
