How to configure Firefox to work with Ultrasurf

One of few downsides of Ultrasurf is that it does not automatically configure Firefox. (This is the case for most of the non-VPN based hide IP tools. But there are always exceptions, like IP Privacy.)

If you want to browse using Firefox and being anonymized by Ultrasurf you have 2 options:

  • Install the Ultrasurf Firefox add-on (see how)
  • Manually configure Firefox to use Ultrasurf servers

The manual configuration is very simple and requires no special tech skills. Here are the steps you have to perform:

  1. Start Firefox
  2. Go to Tools -> Options…

    Firefox 3.0
  3. Choose Network tab and press Settings buttonFirefox 3.0 Internet Config
  4. In the Connection Settings window, check Manual proxy configuration:
  5. In the same window, fill in the HTTP Proxy and the Port taken with the following values: 127.0.0.1 as HTTP Proxy and 9666 as Port (take a look to the picture above).
  6. Press Ok and then Ok again.
  7. Start Ultrasurf (if Ultrasurf is running you see a locker in the bottom-right side of the screen.
  8. Go to WhatIsMyIPAddress.com and check your IP address. It should show one of the IP addresses used by Ultrasurf. You can now browse anonymously.

Important! Do not forget to change your Connection Settings from Manual proxy configuration to Direct connection to the internet, after you exit Ultrasurf. If you don’t you won’t be a able to browse using Firefox.

As an IT specialist and a telecommunications professor I have to add my comment in hope that this may help. First of all there is NO way to bypass Megavideo, the time limit is there for a reason which I know sucks but it is there. You may have done some research online about how to bypass it and every way listed does not work.

We recently conducted a test using all known methods and they failed. The first was to start the video and hit the pause button then once the video finished feeding through we selected work offline – it did not work! The time limit still came up. Then we turned the modem off – still did not work the time limit came on. Then we did both at the same time – did not work! The time limit still came up.

So then we scrambled our IP Address and that still didn’t work. Sometimes if you refresh the page it works for a bit but that’s it – then the time limit comes up again! So why is this damn time limit still popping up after every 72 minutes? Well turns out that when you are watching a video through Megavideo whether you are still online or are now offline and internet disconnected, Megavideo stores files onto your computer that tell it when you have reached the 72 minute deadline.

We found the files and we watched them gathering together as the time passed while we watched a video. Very clever I must admit! If you try and fiddle with those folders you can’t view the video. They gather in the system registry and we have discovered that most online sites like Megavideo are going the same route. Sorry guys but there is no way to bypass Megavideo. But when we find a way – we will let you know!

@Sam – Thank you for letting us know about your tests. I’m sure they will help a lot of users.

this has worked for me, but slows down me computer. Ultrasurf has gotten me around the 54min wait, and gave me another 72mins, then when you turn it off you have an additional 72 mins. There is no way so far to avoid the 72mins that Ive found, but this acts as an refresh or an extension for it. I have had some problems, like the video plays like 5mins then stops buffering forcing you to refresh the page too many times for my liking, but it seems that when I turn off ultrasurf and revert Firefox to normal I have a totally new IP. I left up the Megavideo page that says that your IP address, and they showed my original unproxied IP has been block, then when I went back to “What’s My IP Address” I had a new IP different from the ultrasurf one, and different from my original one that megavideo still was blocking. So yea, either I got hella lucky or it works like that, hell if I know, gotta test it out more….

I do not use Ultrasurf or Megavideo but reading through this thread something crossed my mind that might or might not be relevant.
If it is possible to download a complete video and run it offline what would happen if while the video was running but before the time limit was up you temporarily reset the system clock back to a time just after the video started?
It might well not work but if nobody has already done so it might be worth a try.

Well above some time ago sam stated that there was no way to bypass the megavideo time limit…. this is only true if you live with a static IP.

Me and my friends all have dynamic ip’s and once we reach the 72 minute mark simply restart our modem, CLOSE all firefox + IE processes and then open then Megavideo site and continue watching.

So Sam’s comment of theres no way of bypassing is total not true :)

Also Hotspot shield even worked to get around the 72 minute limit for awhile.
