PhProxy – InBasic 3.1.1A: Firefox add-on to achieve anonymity while browsing

PhProxy, the useful Firefox add-on that is able to change your IP address easily, has been updated. I have written about the previous version(s) several months ago, so let’s see now what’s new on the latest version.

What is PhProxy add-on

The functioning principle of PhProxy – InBasic 3.1.1A is very simple. The add-on redirects your traffic through a web-based proxy from a default list or through a proxy that you add to the list. The server downloads the page into its memory, and then displays it to the user. The result is that only the server’s IP will be logged, and not the user’s.

What’s new on version 3.1.1A

  • Works with Firefox 3.0a1 – 3.1b3
  • The proxy server can be changed from status bar
  • Control over address bar-icon
  • Hot keys for status-bar items
  • Some bugs were fixed

How to install it

Here are the steps you need to perform to start using PhProxy (as previously described) :

  1. Install PhProxy add-on from here. Just press Add to Firefox and follow the instructions
  2. After the installation, you’ll see a small icon in the bottom-right corner of the Firefox window.
  3. phproxy_logo.gif

  4. Now, type in the Address bar the URL you what to access anonymously. (Try for example, www.whatismyipaddress.com or www.iplocate.info ).
  5. Go to the PhProxy icon and right-click to see the menu
  6. PhProxy options

  7. Click Open current site by Phproxy and you’ll see that your IP was changed.
  8. If you what to add your own proxies or make some advanced settings you should go to the Options window:
  9. PhProxy servers

  10. That’s it! You can now browse anonymously using PhProxy add-on.

Important notices from the developer:

- Attention: If after installation, Proxy doesn’t work, use Options and setup new proxy!
- Attention: Default server is only for testing purpose so if you want high speed server find some fresh ones

To sum up, PhProxy is a very useful plugin that hides your IP address by using web-based proxies. The new version let’s you change the proxy server from the status bar which is very nice feature. The biggest problem of the plugin comes exactly from its functioning principle: the speed depends on the proxies used.

What do you think?

Have you use the latest version of PhProxy add-on? Have you find it useful? What is your source of reliable web proxies?
