CyberGhost: Free VPN with German IP Address

There are no many free VPN services on the market, so anytime I find one I happy to write about it. In previous posts, I have mentioned Hotspot Shield and no long ago AlonWeb. Now, it’s about CyberGhost.

CyberGhost is a free VPN service with servers located in Germany. Actually, it’s a commercial VPN service that also has a free version. If you just want surf online anonymously the free version is enough. The free version, called Basic, it’s limited 10GB a month broadband usage. If you want get more you need pay 9.99 Euro a month, and you will get 40GB and 2GB online storage space.

How to get started with CyberGhost

First, you need to download the setup, unzip it and install it. The setup will also install the .NET Framework 3.0 if you don’t have it already.

The next step is to create a CyberGhost VPN account (Click on Create new account button). You will receive a confirmation code on your email that you should use and activate the account.

Next, login to your account. You will get the following screen.

If you want to use free version just click “Connect basic“. Wait a moment, it will connect to service. Finally, you get a German IP address. Check it be visiting www.whatismyipaddress.com.

To close the VPN service just click “Close basic” button.

More features

CyberGhost not only anonymizes your connection but also offers traffic statistics regarding your online activity (yearly and monthly). Another nice feature is that you can exclude some URLs from being anonymized (Exceptions tab). This way you can use the VPN for only sensitive sites not for all of them.

Conclusion

CyberGhost is a very nice VPN service and the most important thing is that it offers a very good FREE version. European users will definitely benefit from the proximity to the CyberGhost server as opposed to the one in Colorado offered by Hotspot Shield.

NO Success unfortunately. After following all the steps (and trying to read the help file) up until “connect basic” I am fine… it is when I hit “connect basic” that a new window ups and I am connected to “Public-Apus” after about 12 seconds.

It then finds my IP and the first bar goes green, the second bar scans for a few seconds (asif loading) and then actually pauses (asif frozen for about 2-4 seconds) and recontinues scanning again.

It seems to keep scanning without any successful connection on the CyberGhost VPN screen (only reads: You are not connected!) under the scanning bar.

When I check MY Network Places -> Network Connections I see that TAP-Win32 Adapter V9 is connected.

While this is happening I am blocked from the internet, if I choose to close CyberGhost VPN I am reconnected as if nothing happened.

Please Help! Can’t work this out! :(

@powell – same problem here. I’m assuming the Great Firewall has blocked Cyberghost server’s IP but not sure..

    Hi,

meanwhile, we were launched the new version CyberGhost VPN 2.
In CyberGhost VPN 2 some bugs were fixed, like sending the real IP address on disconnects.
Now CyberGhost VPN 2 blocks the internet connection.

Please visit http://cyberghostvpn.com for more information.
