PacketiX.NET – Japanese VPN Service

VPN services are a good way to browse safely and anonymously, but most VPN services are commercial, meaning that you have to spend $5-$10/month to use them.

Only a few VPNs are completely free (e.g. Hotspot Shield), but there are services that are commercial and also have a free version (of course, with limited features). I have already written about CyberGhost and AlonWeb, now it’s time for PacketiX.NET.

packetixnet

PacketiX.NET online test service is a free VPN service offered by SoftEther. It is a test platform for developing PacketiX VPN 2.0, a high-security VPN system.

The good news is that this service can be used to browse with Japanese IP address.

PacketiX.NET setup

In order to install PacketiX.NET you have to download the client application “PacketiX VPN Client Manager” and a configuration file – “Secure.vpn“.The setup of this VPN service is not trivial. If you are interested, make sure you read the following tutorial before you get started.

PacketiX.NET Terms of Service

Here is what the producer says about the service:

SoftEther Corp. invites everyone to use this free service. We operate this system to research next generation VPN software technology, especially for measuring load, analysing stability and evaluating security in the case of a high number of users.

The services offered by the PacketiX.NET Online Test Service are offered without warranty. They are offered by SoftEther, Corp. as part of an academic experiment. Thus, hardware errors can occur, and without preliminary notice, parts of the service can be stopped, settings can be updated, and the terms of service can be changed.

@James – You said you could not visit ALL blocked sites, but were you able to visit some blocked sites? Also you could try to disable the other internet connections in order to make sure you use the Japanese one. Let me know the results.

How do they stay operational? The term of service said it’s academic research, so it this funded by the Japanese government?

@archer2 – They also have a commercial application PacketiX VPN.

I have installed PacketiX as instructed in the tutorial. I can connect successfully, but how come I still can not access Facebook and any other blocked sites here in China? What must be wrong with my setup? Anyone who can help? Thanks…

Just to clarify that if ever there is a paid-version of this, then it is NOT what I have installed. I just practically downloaded everything according to the links available at the top portion of this page, under “PacketiX.NET setup”.

Hi Oxyandy: That is correct. I have the tray icon as you have stated, and the icons of my LAN and VPN connections are both active and running. But when I try to connect to ANY blocked sites, I can not access. I’m using Firefox btw…

    Thanks for your support.

Hi Oxyandy: Yes, when I go to Google, it would show Japan’s site. I will try the link as you have suggested, and I will give update asap.

    Thanks for standing by…

    @Carlo

Hi Oxyandy: No luck from my end. I can really successfully connect to PacketiX, but it seems that I still can not access ANY blocked sites. When I was using Hotspot Shield, and then Ultrasurf, I can do so. But now HSS is blocked, and U/S now intermittent. PacketiX would have been my saviour, but now I just can not make it work. My bad…

Well there are ‘other’ options, like dtunnel + vtunnel.com domains, a mate purchased a VPN service on taobao.com works well for him, I do use different dns servers, set in my router, not sure if that makes a difference, I will try later and use ISP default ones with this service later, but I doubt that makes a difference. Hotspot was good !
This packetiX service has never been as good.. peak evening times, particularly bad, late night, day time always better.
