Proxy Servers: Good or/and Evil?

Proxy servers are hot news these days due to the election process in Iran and also due to the legal case where Microsoft is suing against three people that were defrauding Internet advertisers by using automated programs mimic users clickstreams.

David Storn, an expert on Internet and networking technologies who was the former editor-in-chief at Network Computing, Tom’s Hardware.com, and DigitalLanding.com, wrote a great article explaining what proxy servers are and how can they be used both for good and bad. Here are some interesting fragments from the article:

That is the good side of proxies. What about the evil side? Proxies are supposed to be for internal users of an enterprise, but if a hacker can find out the IP address of an internal proxy, they can gain access to lots of network resources.

There are also proxies that are used to make your browsing history anonymous, which can be used for both good and evil; depending on what information you are trying to hide.
