How to configure Firefox 3.5 to use a proxy

Everytime a new major version of Firefox is released, I check to see if there are any changes in the way the browser can be configured to use a proxy. Firefox 3.5 brings no changes this this area, but I will recap for the ones that don’t know.

The first step is to find a good proxy (IP:port).  Take a look to Proxy4Free.com. You are probably interested in changing your country, but you also must ne careful to choose a high anonymous proxy.

After you have chosen the proxy you can start configuring your Firefox 3.5 browser.

Here is what you have to do next:

  1. Open Firefox 3.5
  2. Go to Tools -> Options…
    firefox35_options

  3. Choose Network tab and press Settings button
    firefox35_connection
  4. In the Connection Settings window, check Manual proxy configuration:firefox35_conn
  5. Tehn, fill in the HTTP Proxy and the Port taken from the above proxy list (e.g. 75.126.231.173: 3128 where the IP address of the proxy is 75.126.231.173 and the port is 3128) (take a look above).
  6. Press Ok and then Ok again and you are done.

After the configuration is completed go to What Is My IP page and check your new IP address. You can now browse anonymously using Firefox 3.5.

When you are done with the proxy don’t forget to switch back to No proxy.

P.S. Are you looking for premium proxies? Here is what I recommend: Anonymous Proxies.

    I used to have the drap and drop toolbar add-on but it isn’t compatible with Firefox 3.5, so are their any alternatives?

    apologies for commenting on a blog post so old, but i did all these steps and they worked like a charm. But however, gmail seems to outsmart this, and when I created a gmail account it automatically detected my home country as the IP address accessing this rather than the proxy IP I put in. I used firefox for both and successfully got the what-is-my-ip to pick up the proxy I used, and when i went to google it even brought up the proxy country default page. I thought it was curious the google ads were for the location where I am (not the proxy country), so i checked the “details” link at the bottom and sure enough it says the account was last accessed in the non-proxy country. Any way to work around this? Thanks!
