How To Set Up a VPN for Nokia and Other Symbian Based Phones

To set up a VPN connection for a phone running Symbian OS, like Nokia, is a difficult task. The problem is that Nokia does not provide a PPTP VPN client for their phones, they have an IPSEC client that is quite complicated. A handy solution is SymVPN from Telexy Networks, the only PPTP VPN client for Nokia phones and is available as a free 14 day trial version and cost €24.99.

Nokia VPN - Symvpn

SymVPN 1.00 allows you to create a regular Access Point (from the Symbian OS point of view) that can be used in an ordinary manner by any appropriate application that requires an Internet connection.

SymVPN is compatible with the Series 60 3rd Edition phones based on Symbian OS 9.1:

- Nokia E-Series: E51, E60, E61, E61i, E63, E65, E66, E70, E71, E90;
- Nokia N-Series: N80, N80 Internet Edition, N81, N81 8GB, N82, N91, N91 8GB, N92, N93, N93i, N95, N95 8GB

It is expected to work with new Samsung G810 and any S60 3.0/3.1 edition devices with WLAN, 3G or WiMAX support. It can also be used on S60 3.2 edition devices too (Nokia N78, N79, N85, N96, Samsung INNOV8) with applications that operate with Access Points in 3.0-3.1 editions style.

How To Install SymVPN and Set Up a VPN Connection

  1. Download the free trial version of the SymVPN on your phone. Follow the installation instructions here. A FAQ is also available.

    symvpn_install

Finally you should see SymVPN installed on your phone:

    symvpn_done

  2. Next, you need a VPN account that accepts PPTP connection. Here are several such services: HideIPVPN, HideMyAss, ibVPN, StrongVPN, etc. After you create an account for any of these services you get a server name, username and password.
  3. Download a user guide in pdf format from here that shows step-by-step how to create a new VPN connection.
  4. Where indicated in the instructions enter the server name, user name and password you were provided when you signed up for the PPTP service.symvpn_conn
  5. You can start browsing anonymously.

@afzalkhan – Probably you are not aware about market prices for mobile software that is significantly more complicated then average. If €29.95 is expensive for you then feel free to consider another VPN solution for €59.95 – NCP Secure Entry Symbian Client.

Why dont you stop going from site to site and advertising your program?
cause im aware of market prices and both you and ncp you are charging that much cause of nokia’s fault not having a vpn client and unable to find is somewhere else.

A reasonable price would be about 10 euro and not a single cent more.
So go ahead jump from forum to forum and from blog to blog and post about your program (which ive tested i cant make it work and you cant find a solution about it.You even saying it in your site:
Telexy does NOT guarantee or warrant that

    (a) The software will be completely error-free or fault-free or reliable.
    (b) The software is suitable for a particular purpose.
    (c) The software will meet your requirements.
    (d) The defects in the software will be corrected.
    (e) Internet channel will be 100% available.)

and you expect people to pay 30 euro for a program that might not work.
    And there is no refund!
But as i said go ahead and do whatever you can cause real soon it will be a free one in the market, so i wanna see then whos gonna pay you 30 euro

Yes, indeed, SymVPN is the best VPN software for Nokia phones. Works like a charm on my Nokia 5800 XM. However you will need to use SymVPN 2.0 if you have Nokia N97, 5800 or any other latest Nokia phones.
Saves a lot of money if VPN is your only choice for VoIP calls.

There is no OpenVPN software for Symbian phones.
I am using this SymVPN to connect my home and office computers. It works flawlessly on my Nokia N97 phone.

Why spend 30 bucks for something that Nokia give you for free? Nokia has the mVPN client, which works with services like 12vpn. You also don’t need to do any of those setup steps, just send the xyz.vpn file to your phone and select to install it.

SymVPN 2.00 is working just fine on my Nokia E71 with firmware v.410.21.010.
I am using SymVPN for VoIP and to access corporate network.

Check documentation and FAQ, everything is described there. This software is very simple to use and is reliable as well, I have no any problem with it. It is just working silently on my phone. I am using VPN Access Point the same way as a regular one. That is all there is.

@rodrigo – Hi Rodrigo, on my Nokia N97 mini the SymVPN didn’t work. I tried almost all the possibilities of configuration, and don’t connect. Could you send to me the server configuration that you are using?

Thanks. Rafael from Consultoria Linux Team

I’m using SymVPN since 2008. Initially it was on Nokia E72, N97 and it is on my Nokia C6 now. The software works flawlessly all the time.
Using VPN account from SwissVPN, also using this software for connection to my office and home computers with Windows 2008 and Windows 7 respectively.
For those who are experiencing any problems. Keep in mind that in many places on Internet you may get a fake software versions that will not work as they are only created to collect your information and send it away. To avoid such problems, make sure to download software directly from developer website. Compare for yourself and you will see that original software is really working just fine.

The problem is that the free native mobile VPN client from Nokia only support IPSec protocol, which is not supported by most VPN providers. Here is more detailed instruction: http://is0.eu/nokia4vpn
