How to setup a VPN on iPad and access restricted websites from everywhere

Update 4/30/2010: Due to the lack of support for Flash, Hulu and other video streaming site would not work on iPad!

If you just got yourself an iPad and you can not access your favorite US or UK site, here is a good news: iPad can be easily setup to use a VPN connection via PPTP, L2TP or IPSec protocols.

A VPN service establishes a connection to a remote server that resides on the country where the service you want to use is. Once you connect to the VPN all of your internet traffic flows though that connection so that from the other side at least it looks like the connection originates at the server and not your iPad.

First of all you need to register for a VPN account. If you need it to access US restricted sites then you need to subscribe to a VPN service the provides US IP address like HideIpVPN, StrongVPN, ibVPN. If you want to access UK restricted sites then you need a UK VPN account.

You will have to choose a service that accepts PPTP connection. After you subscribe you will receive a username and a password.

On the iPad go to Settings > Network and create a new VPN connection. Fill in the username and password and the server address. Press the Connect button and within a few seconds you’ll be connected to the VPN and all your traffic will be going through a US or UK server. Thus you will be able to access any US or UK restricted website.

Moreover, if you subscribe to a VPN service you will be able to use it on both your laptop or desktop computer and the iPad. Enjoy!

Thanks so much for this, it worked a treat! The only problem is when I have VPN turned on I cannot send or receive email. Do you or anyone know why this is or have a solution?

    Many thanks
    Freddie

@Freddie – Most of the VPN services block ports that are used by email in order to prevent spam. So, the only solution is to turn off the VPN when you want to send emails.

This still won’t allow iPad users to watch Hulu on the iPad, correct?

Got my VPN working on my iPad. Hulu does NOT work, because the iPad does not have flash. If you know some way to make it work, please enlighten me.

Other free VPNs are Hotspot Shield or TheFreeVPN but I don’t think they can be setup on iPad.

There is an iPad app called Hulu Plus … Which means you don’t have to worry about Flash.. Because the app if for iPad. But it costs 10 bucks per month. I would gladly pay that if I could find a free VPN service that really works on tne iPad. I live in Mexico and Hulul is blocked, even on the iPad app version.
