Expat Shield – Free UK VPN to Unblock Restricted UK Sites (BBC iPlayer, ITV player, Channel 4, Spotify)

AnchorFree, the provider of the popular Hotspot Shield, has launched a new free VPN service that is able to unblock BBC iPlayer and Spotify.

The new service called Expat Shield enables users to create VPN connection to servers located in the United Kingdom. Also, the service provides online anonymity and offers protection from packet sniffers by encrypted (HTTPS) connections.

Expat Shield is available for Windows XP/Vista/7. The program installs a VPN client using which users can quickly connect and disconnect from the VPN server. The program is also compatible with the 64-bit Windows editions.

As you probably know from Hotspot Shield, Expat Shield is free, but it is supported with advertisement banners which sticks to the top of the browser page.

Important! Make sure you unselect Toolbar installation option, which is not needed for the Free VPN to work. Since it comes free, you would need to bear the ads which sticks on top of your browser.

Update (via Pilgrim): It seems that you cannot run Expat Shield and Hotspot Shield together.

Some people are having trouble with this and one of the reasons seems to be if you have previously had Hotspot Shield installed.

When you uninstall HSS it sometimes leaves adapters behind, check Device Manager – Show Hidden Devices – Network Adapters.
If there are any HSS adapters both they and their registry keys need to be removed before Expat Shield will work.

The same can be true if you uninstall Expat Shield and then install HSS.

    Hello!
When I try to install ExpatShield it says that I have to delete Hotspot first! Any ideas how to install new VPN without deleting Hotspot Shield? I use Hotspot often and I need them…

@Chen – It seems that Expat Shield does not provide UK IPs these days. No solution so far.

@HideIP Admin – ah.. thanks admin, so it wasn’t something i did wrong. oh well since it’s no different from HSS, guess i’ll keep it since i don’t want to go through the hassle of reinstalling HSS. we’ll just see if they do offer it at a later time.

@HideIP Admin – try again Chen. I had BBC iPlayer working again yesterday after almost 2 weeks of getting a US ip instead of a UK one.

There are two separate programmes, Hotspot Shield which gives a US IP Address, and Expat Shield which gives a UK IP Address. If you are getting the US version I would download Revo Uninstaller, then use that to uninstall HSS. It will almost certainly find a host of registry entries that the built in uninstaller leaves behind. After full un-installation reboot the computer and down load Expat Shield rather than Hotspot Shield. That will give you a UK IP Address
