PacketiX.NET – Japanese VPN Service

VPN services are a good way to browse safely and anonymously, but most VPN services are commercial, meaning that you have to spend $5-$10/month to use them.

Only a few VPNs are completely free (e.g. Hotspot Shield), but there are services that are commercial and also have a free version (of course, with limited features). I have already written about CyberGhost and AlonWeb, now it’s time for PacketiX.NET.

packetixnet

PacketiX.NET online test service is a free VPN service offered by SoftEther. It is a test platform for developing PacketiX VPN 2.0, a high-security VPN system.

The good news is that this service can be used to browse with Japanese IP address.

Latest Firefox Releases Fix Important Security Problems

firefoxlogoThe vulnerabilities fixed by the latest versiond are serious and could allow the attacker to run arbitrary code on your computer.

During April, there have been 2 release for Firefox (versions 3.0.9 and 3.0.10). The new versions fix several stability and security issues. If you don’t have automatic updates enabled in Firefox you should download and install the new version.

The 3.0.9 version brings only security fixes and 3.0.10 fixes a regression problem introduced in 3.0.9 that caused some users to experience frequent crashes. Read More »

HotSpot Shield can still be used to access Hulu

As of this week, Hulu is able to detect proxy servers. This means that if you are located outside US and you are trying to access Hulu using proxy tools you’ll get the following message:

Hulu detects proxies

There have been bloggers (Chris Wooddill, Mike Haugland) that have reported that Hulu could not be accessed anymore using HotSpot Shield. It seemed that Hulu had blocked the IPs used by HS.

Fresh Berlin Proxy

I’ve recently discovered a fresh web proxy located on a server in Berlin, Germany. As you probably know, proxies act as intermediate between you and the site you want to visit.

Using faqtup.com you browse anonymously and/or bypass your school, college or workplace network restrictions.
Is your favorite site blocked? Then you browse through this proxy instead!

FoxyProxy – A Firefox proxy add-on with a twist

This is a guest post by Scott Mulligan. If you want to guest post on this blog, don’t hesitate to contact me.

There are many great proxy related add-ons for Firefox but most of them are fairly similar. I would like to introduce FoxyProxy which is a little bit different from the rest of the competition. The main strength of FoxyProxy is that it allows you to set up pre-defined “rules” so that FoxyProxy can automatically switch between one or more proxy servers depending on which website you’re browsing.

foxyproxy_logoSo as a simple example let’s say that you have been kicked out of a forum and want to be able to continue posting by running a proxy and changing your IP address. You can set up FoxyProxy so that your proxy remains inactive until you go to the website that you are banned from. As soon as FoxyProxy recognizes the URL you have predefined, it automatically opens the website using a proxy and will keep it active until you leave the site. This idea of selectively turning on your proxy for certain websites can save you a lot of time if you are manually turning your proxy on and off. Or on the other hand, it can save you a lot of bandwidth if you are the type of person who leaves your proxy on all the time.

Test your IP address with MyIpTest.com

I have recently discovered a useful site that is able to provide a lot of useful information about your IP address. MyIpTest.com exposes a set of tools that help you know more about your IP address. Let’s take a tour.

myiptest

Lookup IP address, Geolocation, IP address tracking

The first thing you can find out is your IP address, whether you are using a proxy or not, your ISP (Internet Service Provider), your location (city, country, latitude, longitude). Also there is a Google Map that shows your location.

You can try using a web proxy and see the information that is shown. Next to the IP you check your IP for blacklisting or perform a whois search.
