So you are one of those users who opted for a Kindle Fire from Amazon rather than choose other tablets.

What is a Kindle Fire?

Kindle Fire is Amazon’s tablets who has an agressive lower price (around $199) compared to an iPad2 or a Samsung Galaxy Tab. It is running Android Gingerbread-based Honeycomb variant of 2.3.

Although people tend to compare the Kindle Fire to iPad, it definitley can’t be compared head-to-head. Amazon’s vice-president clearly stated that the Kindle Fire is mainly for media consumption. By the way, he estimates that if you’re planning to watch a movie on it while you are in a plane (though no Wi-Fi yet), the Kindle Fire will last 7 hours.

Despite this initial warning about comparing, the Kindle actually has the nice features of tablets: it comes with two-finger multitouch, has a “desktop-class” PDF reader.

On the “lighter” options (they had to accept some tradeoffs so as to get into that $199 price: the Kindle Fire has no camera, only comes with USB connection and its browser comes without plugins.

While the Kindle Fire has mail applications, and even it applications like twitter, facebook or netflix are expected to land on this device, the Kindle is mainly geared for media consumption.

Why would you need a VPN on a Kindle Fire?

This is a legitimate question since media consumption can be done with files stored on the Kindle Fire. But in fact, that device has been conceived to tap into Amazon’s large database of media and publications. Moreover, it is a common trend nowadays to host his media on the cloud so as to be able to stream them from multiple devices. Well, this sounds like a gadget technology rather than a must-have device, you may think.

Well, not necessarily. Think about the following scenario: if you are a US customer and you plan to travel outside the US – unless you have loaded your Kindle Fire with all the media and books you want to read BEFORE leaving the country, you’d be in trouble. Chances are that you just can’t connect with your Kindle Fire and download the latest fiction that is available on Amazon Store once you’re away: geolocation limitation, are you there?

No built-in VPN client for Kindle Fire

If you are a regular reader of How-To-Hide-Ip, you know that under such challenge, the usual solution is to fire a VPN to override the geolocation limitation, then you’re set. But the truth is: a Kindle Fire doesn’t come with a VPN client- or at least, it takes some headaches before setting this up.

Use a US-based router

The good thing, though, is that full-color 7″ tablet comes with a Wi-Fi connection. And this means that, if you don’t want to worry about how to root your Android-based Kindle Fire, then you can always configure an internet router to do the VPN setting for you: get it connecting to a US-based VPN router, then have . Once that internet router is setup (make sure it can act as a Wi-Fi access point), then all you have to do is connect via Wi-Fi to that internet gateway, then yit work as a Wi-Fi AP.

Now, all you have to do is connect to that Wi-Fi zone from your Kindle Fire – it will inherit from the internet router’s IP address (US-based), so you should be able to download your favorite book from Amazon via your Kindle Fire.

This is the end of the year, and some of us just like getting recommendations on books that they should be reading. Since we are into VPN and privacy topics, I thought I’d put a small list of books that are worth considering.

So as to ease things, I have selected titles from Amazon’s database. The criteria for selecting them was simple: books that address some of the most voiced concerns or interests for readers of How-to-hide-ip.info.

VPN
- “Networking All-in-one for dummies”: as it is now well-known with the “for dummies” series, this is a simple book that is written in layman’s terms. I have included it since most of us nowadays have a home network, so I thought some of our readers would find it interesting to read.
- “Troubleshooting VPN Networks“(Mark Lewis): with its 840pages, this book is for the most courageous who want to understand the different underlying protocols of a VPN network. This is more targeted to a techie guy who is managing a corporate VPN network. Indeed, “Troubleshooting VPN networks” will serve as a reference book that you’ll need to get at your hand’s reach if VPN is what you manipulate on a day-to-day basis

Privacy
- “The filter bubble: what the internet is hiding from you”(Eli Pariser). There has been (and will always be) a long debate on the topic of customizing the user experience on the internet VS privacy issues. On the other hand, advertisers are putting a pressure on publishers so as to deliver “on-topic” content to the potential target. This book seems to be filled with in-depth view of how this “battle” has evolved and where it is heading. The headline says it all “An eye-opening account of how the hidden rise of personalization on the Internet is controlling-and limiting-the information we consume”
- “Surveillance or security:? The risks posed by wiretapping technologies” (Susan Landau): this book deals with another debate when it comes to privacy-related technology matters : regulation vs technology. Technology is evolving at a very high-pace and regulation is trying to accommodate it while arguing for a more secure environment. This books gives an in-depth understanding on how things are tightly related.

Mobile Security
- “Mobile device security for Dummies”: yet another book from the “for dummies” series. Mobile is getting more and more popular nowadays, and while users are more prone to installing new applications and trying new devices, security isn’t yet seriously considered. This book gives you an overview of the security issues that may arise from mobiles

This list can’t be an exhaustive one, and while we deliberately took some less-technical approach (except for that 840 pages book), we think those books will give you a better understanding of the challenges that users are facing when dealing with privacy in this fast-moving technology-driven world.

Do you have any other book recommendations? Feel free to share with the readers so that we can all be knowledgeable about this topic. The comment system is there for you to give your feedbacks and recommendations, so feel free to use it.
