When it comes to anonymizing and securing your internet connection, you’ve got different options. Depending on what you want to achieve, you can go for one solution or another. But let’s first summarize the options:

You can either use some proxy gateways that will mask your actual IP address and use it own address. This is the most challenging solution to find as the list of proxies change so often.

You can also use VPN servers. With such solution, you can chose the country where you want to land. Those solutions are especially very efficient for overcoming geolocation-limited services like Hulu, BBC iPlayer, …

Then, for those who actually wants some “random/parallel” network that will hide them: ToR is one solution.

For those who are more into browser-based solutions, you can find out addons that will allow you to achieve some kind of anonymity too

Except for ToR, most of those solutions expect you to connect you to one gateway, then this gateway will “mask” your connection before forwarding your request to any internet server that you want to see.

As I browsed the internet, I stumbled on one concept that seemed interesting (at least at first approach), it is called RiccoVPN and it is published by PrivacyProtector.

So I checked on their website and found out that they provide a privacy solution that requires you to install their proprietary client. What popped to my eyes is that it comes with a FREE solution that is called RiccoVPN FREE: while it is expected to be a “bait” so that a potential user jumps into the paid version, the features can be of use for standard things like: connecting from a public Wi-Fi, from hotels or Airport. The caveat is that the bandwidth is limited to 512kbps and you can’t pretend to be somewhere else: though the free version isn’t a solution for bypassing geolocation-limited services.

As one would expect, most of the argument is stated in a way that you are pushed to opt for the RiccoVPN Plus solution instead of staying with the free solution. So I checked the Plus option and found out that RiccoVPN is implementing an encrypted P2P network instead of relying on a VPN gateway.

The idea is innovative, but yet has to prove how efficient it is. By leveraging on P2P network, internet connections are harder to track indeed (there’s no VPN gateway in the scheme). But since every user in the network is expected to run the RiccoVPN client, I would suspect that if I run the RiccoVPN client on my computer, then it would mean that my computer would also be used for encrypting other people’s traffic.

While this article isn’t a recommendation, I think there’s some potential in that no-gateway concept. With SOPA-like bills, there’s a tendancy to find some technical solutions that won’t allow you to be tracked from your ISP or VPN provider. From the “commercial ad”, RiccoVPN claims that “we do not need to know you“. What do you think of that approach? Do you think it is something that you would try?

There are several types of proxy servers available on the net and having some basic knowledge about them will help you determine what you want and how to get it done.

Transparent Proxies

These proxies do not provide any IP protection and are simply used to speed up your browsing experience. They cache websites allow you to quickly go back to a site you visited earlier. If you are looking to hide your IP to the outside world, stay clear of these proxies.

Anonymous Proxies

These types of proxies provide some reasonable anonymity for most users. However, they identify themselves publicly as proxies while hiding your original IP address. This means that while using anonymous proxy, it may be difficult to track to you but eventually, you could be tracked.

Distorting Proxies

As the name suggests, these proxies will provide an incorrect IP address that is displayed on the http headers. They will effectively hide your original IP address.

Elite Proxies

These are highly anonymous proxy servers that do no identify themselves publicly as proxies. They provide maximum privacy on the Internet since they both hide their own identification while at the same time conceal your original IP address.

Most public proxies are slow and not very safe. Very fast elite proxies come at a fee.

The most preferred way to connect to a fast proxy is to use IP hiding software which automatically configures your browser to use an elite proxy. Most of these software applications will hide your IP by changing your IP and your country providing anonymity.

Always check your IP before connecting to a proxy and after connecting to make sure that you are running behind a proxy. Many websites, including this website, offer tools to help you determine if you are anonymous or you are publicly visible.

3. ProxyThisPage

ProxyThisPage loads the site you visit in a proxied page in which your identity is safe. It uses proxies from several lists: MyProxy, Shallx, ProxyMe. You can add your own proxies.

Iran has the most sophisticated internet censorship in the world, according to CircleID.com. The filtering during the 2009 presidential campaign and the role of the Internet in the post-election turmoil brought a heightened level of attention to the country’s Internet filtering system. The OpenNet Initiative considers that the Internet censorship system in Iran has become one of the most comprehensive and sophisticated in the world.

The good news is that there are still methods to bypass the filters. VPNs will always work as there is no way to block them, especially those that using OpenVPN. The high level encryption is enough to protect the traffic and unblock the firewalls.

Some VPN providers even have special offers for Iranian users. For example, HideIpVPN gives away 50% of the regular price.

A more afordable alternative to VPNs is the proxies. Recently, I found a list of open proxies that can be used by Iranian Internet users. These are set up by those that fight against censorship and there are available only for users connecting from Iran.

Here is the list of proxies:

84.121.125.10:80
98.142.210.231:3128
66.31.18.247:80
70.228.189.148:3128 (YouTube, FaceBook, and Twitter only)
97.107.137.80:3128
200.65.127.161:3128
202.94.144.73:80
129.82.12.188:3128
212.123.91.165:8080
71.48.222.54:11764
60.6.205.26:808
86.101.185.112:8080
86.101.185.109:8080
69.92.182.124:2100
128.112.139.28:3124
198.144.36.172:5555
88.198.85.229:80

The list may be out of date and many proxies may be already blocked. The owner of the site that published the proxies is able to offer you the latest proxies available. You should contact his on this email address me[at]austinheap.com.

After you get the proxies you’ll have to setup your browser to use them. Here are some useful tutorials:

Proxies are probably the simplest way to bypass firewalls and unblock websites. They are websites that act as intermediates between you and the site you visit. You enter the address/URL of the site you want to visit in a text box, press Submit/Go button and then the proxy asks for the site/page to the web server where the site/page is located. This way the site you visit is not able to log your real IP address, but the IP of the proxy.

But finding a good proxy is a difficult task. Most of them are slow and not reliable.

The good news comes from Digital Inspiration. They published a tutorial that shows you how to setup own free proxy server by using Google App Engine. Thus you will browse via proxy independent of your home network and without having to trust a sketchy third-party proxy. Check out the video below:

The same steps are described below:

Step 1: Go to Google App Engine and sign-in using your Google Account.

Step 2: Click the Create an Application button. If it’s your first time, Google will send a verification code via SMS to your mobile phone number. Type the code and you’re all set to create apps with Google App Engine.

Step 3: Choose a sub-domain that for your proxy server. Then agree to the Google Terms and click Save. The sub-domain is also your App ID that will uniquely identify your proxy application.

Step 4. Next you have to to create and upload the proxy server application to Google App Engine. Go to python.org, download the 2.6.4 Windows Installer and install Python.

Step 5. Go to code.google.com, download the Google App Engine SDK for Python and install it.

Step 6. Download this zip file from Digital Inspiration and extract it to some folder on your desktop. The zip file contains a couple of text files (written in HTML and Python) that implements the proxy functions.

Step 7. Start the Google App Engine Launcher program from the desktop and set the right values under Edit –> Preferences.

Step 8. Click File –> Add Existing Application under the Google App Launcher program and browse to the directory that you created in Step 6. Click the Edit button and replace “YOUR_APP_ID” with the ID (sub-domain) that you set up in Step 3.

Step 9: Click Deploy and your online proxy server is now ready for use.

FoxyProxy and SwitchProxy are two great Firefox add-ons that can be used to hide your IP address. The downsize of these solutions is that they depend on proxies that you need to find yourself. Actually, both add-ons function as easy to use proxy changers and they do not provide any proxies.

The problem: where to find working proxies to be used with these add-ons?

The solution: proxy list sites.

You should know from the start that there is no such thing as fast and reliable open/free proxy. Most open proxies have a short life (from several days to several weeks) and they provide low speed due to the high traffic demand. Do not expect to watch Hulu using a free proxy! (If you find such a proxy let me know )

Still, open proxies are good for anonymous browsing and unblocking websites like Facebook, MySpace and Orkut.

So, where to find good proxies? Here is a list of 5 sites that provide pretty good, tested proxies:

SamAir.ru

Proxy4free.com

Xroxy.com

Freshproxylist.org

Tech-faq.com

Go to any of this sites and select a proxy (IP address and the port – IP:port) from the desired country. If you want to unblock Facebook for example the best choice would be a US proxy.

Important! Make sure you always choose high-anonymous proxies. (Q&A: What type of proxy should I use?)

What to do next?

After you choose a proxy you need to setup FoxyProxy and SwitchProxy to use it. The following tutorials show you how to do it:

Are you looking for excellent proxies? Here is what I recommend: Anonymous Proxies.

Mobile devices running Windows Mobile 6.1 are very popular these days, as they offer a great user experience. If you have such a smartphone and you are concerned about your online privacy, you are probably interested in finding out how to set up your device to use a proxy.

By using a proxy you are able not only to hide your IP address (and location) while browsing the internet, but you are also able to unblock restricted sites like Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, etc..

The first step is to find a good proxy. You may subscribe to private proxies or you can search for a free ones on sites like SamAir.ru or Proxy4Free. The free/open proxies are quite slow, but some of them offer enough speed for regular browsing; not for watching videos on YouTube or unblocking Hulu.

Next, set up you phone to work with the selected proxy.

Step 1. Select Settings and then All Settings.

Step 2. Go to Connections tab and click on Connections.
Step 3. For your active connection (or the one your are using to connect to the internet; it may be the one provided by the service provider or a local network) click on Set up my proxy server.

Step 4. Next check This network usese a proxy to connect to the Internet
Step 5. Click on Advanced …
Step 6. In the next screen click on HTTP.
Step 7. Then enter the proxy IP and port and if you are using a private/paid proxy enter the user name and password.

Step 8. Go to your browser and visit http://myiptest.com to check your IP address.
Step 9. You are done! When you don’t longer need to browse anonymously make sure you unckeck the This network usese a proxy to connect to the Internet option.

Note: The screenshots were take on a HTC Touch Diamond 2.

Q: While looking for proxies on proxy sites (for example on SamAir.ru), I see both HTTP and SOCKS proxies. What is the difference between those two? What type of proxies should I choose?

A: SOCKS is a protocol that allows nearly every type or application to be tunneled through it while HTTP is specialized for HTTP but can sometimes be used for other stuff as well.

Also HTTP proxies can be used to increase or decrease the anonymity and privacy you gain through them as they can change parts of the content that is transmitted, SOCKS is just plain data transfer without adding or removing anything of the content transmitted.

SOCKS uses a handshake protocol to inform the proxy software about the connection that the client is trying to make and may be used for any form of TCP or UDP socket connection, whereas an HTTP proxy analyzes the HTTP headers sent through it in order to deduce the address of the server and therefore may only be used for HTTP traffic.

The following examples demonstrate the difference between the SOCKS and HTTP proxy protocols: [Via Wikipedia]

SOCKS

Bill wishes to communicate with Jane over the internet, but a firewall exists on his network between them and Bill is not authorized to communicate through it himself. Therefore, he connects to the SOCKS proxy on his network and sends information about the connection he wishes to make to Jane. The SOCKS proxy opens a connection through the firewall and facilitates the communication between Bill and Jane.

HTTP

Bill wishes to download a web page from Jane, who runs a web server. Bill cannot directly connect to Jane’s server, as a firewall has been put in place on his network. In order to communicate with the server, Bill connects to his network’s HTTP proxy. His internet browser communicates with the proxy in exactly the same way it would the target server—it sends a standard HTTP request header. The HTTP proxy reads the request and looks for the Host header. It then connects to the server specified in the header and transmits any data the server replies with back to Bill.

In most cases configuring applications to use a SOCKS proxy is done in much the same way as configuring them to use HTTP proxies. Applications that support SOCKS proxies will have a separate entry in the menu or configuration dialogue where HTTP proxies are configured which let you configure a SOCKS proxy. Some applications will ask you to choose between SOCKS 4 and SOCKS 5 proxy settings, and in most cases SOCKS 5 is the better option, although some SOCKS proxies may only work with SOCKS 4.

Conclusion

You can think of SOCKS proxies as a more advanced version of HTTP proxies, that allow many different kinds of Internet traffic from many different protocols to be sent through a tunnel, thereby bypassing blocks.

As both types of proxies will hide your IP address, you should choose the type that is accepted by the application you need to anonymize. If both HTTP and SOCKS are available, I advise you to use SOCKS as they are faster.

Are you looking for excellent proxies? Here is what I recommend: Anonymous Proxies.

Web proxies are probably the simplest way to hide your IP address. Just enter the url of the site you want to visit anonymously in the text box of the web proxy and press the Submit/Go button. Of course, there are downsides of this hide ip approach, but the idea is that it’s a solution that work (Pros & Cons of Browsing Anonymously using Web Proxies).

There are plenty of web proxies available on the net, but where to find them? And more important, where to find good, working web proxies? Poor performance, or slow download/upload speeds has been the biggest traditional complaint about using proxy servers.

Let’s see below 3 sites that provide proxy servers you can use.

Public Proxy Servers

PublicProxyServers is an independent, free service to allow you to find proxy servers for privacy and to circumvent browsing controls.

The site is excellent as it tracks the performance of each server on their free proxy list. You can access the proxies access time if you are looking for the fastest proxies. Want to appear that you’re coming from another country? Sort the list by country!

[Public Proxy Servers]

Centurian

Centurian is another site that offers much more than a free proxy list. The list can be sorted by the criteria of how new it is on the list, country, or script used to provide the proxy server. The speed of the proxy servers is shown graphically with a bar, that represents its score out of 10 for speed.

[Centurian]

Hide IP Proxy

Hide-IP-Proxy is a blog that posts working web proxies. The main advantage is that you can subscribe by email to get fresh proxies everytime they are posted. Also you can find proxies listed by country and by state (for US).

If you need to change your IP address and you are not happy with the classical hide ip tools, you can try finding a proxy that suits exactly your needs. For this you firstly need a proxy source (like SamAir.ru) and, secondly, a fast way to test the proxies. Of course, you can try to test them one by one but it would take you like forever to find a working proxy. Here are 5 free tools you can use to test your proxies automatically:

Elite Proxy Switcher

Elite Proxy Switcher (EPS) is a professional proxy switcher for your browsers as well as a proxy checker. It can test the details (speed, anonymity, country and whether gateway, ssl/https, dangerous or codeen) of the proxy and automatically change the proxy settings of your browsers (Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox).

Charon

Charon provides a fully customisable way of filtering out unwanted proxies via control files, a proxy tester to check anonymity – and a fully functional search engine crawler to find lists of posted proxies.

MultiProxy

MultiProxy is a multifunctional personal proxy server that protects your privacy while on the Internet as well as speeds up your downloads, especially if you are trying to get several files form overseas or from otherwise rather slow server.

ProxyHunter

Proxy Hunter is a classical and powerful tool for scanning and verifying proxies.

SocksChain

Sockschain is a program that allows to work with any Internet service through a chain of SOCKS or HTTP proxies to hide the real IP-address. SocksChain can function as a usual SOCKS-server that transmits queries through a chain of proxies.
