Why use a VPN for torrent?

Well, the first time I heard of VPN solutions that allow torrent traffic, my first reaction was that it is a tricky and very sensitive situation. I can understand why VPN providers do not allow torrent traffic since, at the end of the day, it’s really hard to differentiate legitimate from illegal torrent activities.

So I tried to figure out why one would want a VPN solution for his torrent connections. And the only thing I found out was that it would help any torrent users to “hide” behind the VPN provider for his connections. Why would one do that? You give the answer.
Anyway, since we want to do some reviews of different VPN solutions, it’s almost impossible not to try one of those VPN providers that allow torrent traffic. So I got torrent traffic enabled on my ibVPN package – though I needed to test it

My Invisible Browsing VPN review

As you probably know, I’m using Invisible Browsing VPN (AKA ibVPN) as my VPN solution. So I’m more than happy to have received a bonus torrent addon to my current package for testing purposes. So now that you’ve got full disclosure, let’s see how it worked.

So I already had mtorrent installed on my computer with some old torrent pending. First thing I tried was to launch my ibVPN then launch mtorrent hoping that it’ll resume, but it didn’t. To be frank, I didn’t really take the necessary time to troubleshoot it, so I decided to have a setup that is similar to a fresh installation. So I decided to install Vuze on that same computer. The idea was to import new torrent files into vuze, run ibVPN with torrent support and see what happens.

So I loaded Vuze with two 10 Mbps: I know this ain’t a big file, but I had to be able to quickly download some files so that I can complete the whole cycle: downloading the torrent file, completing the download then seeding. I got ibVPN running for the whole night with Vuze running in the background on my computer, then went sleeping.

In the morning, well, the two files completely downloaded to my computer, and I could even find that it was seeding. My ibVPN connection was still running and when I checked my VPN connection, it was still ON. From what I know of, ibVPN do not reconnect automatically if it got disconnected, so I can say that the ibVPN is quite stable even with torrent traffic going through it.

Just for the purpose of rechecking things, I repeated the experience the next night, and was delighted to see that Vuze was still seeding in the morning.

For reference purposes, I only have the US &CA package from ibVPN, but I guess the same results would be found for other countries. Anyway, if you ever test it under different situations, I’d be glad to hear about your experience. Feel free to share them in the comment section. And yes, I’ll also be glad to hear your thoughts on why you’d need a VPN for torrents.

Recently in the news there was a case about a production house filing suits against a thousands of users who downloaded its movie illegally from the site. Really, it’s something which affects every one of us.

We all know how easy it is to download a free movie from internet nowadays. But getting sued for the same is really an eye opener.

ISPs in the country might have trouble with such production houses which seek a way to earn big bucks by suing sites like torrent and its users. Unlike big budgeted movies small movie production houses try to earn the maximum out of filing suits in the courts against the open source sites which provide easy access to online users to get the certain movies downloaded.

But suing the users is not going to solve the problem. First and foremost the production houses should stop making their movies available to such sites. That is there duty to protect there content from such public spots online. Sites like BitTorrent are made for this. They have to share content to the users, unless there wouldn’t be any traffic at all. Letting the movie freely available in the site through torrents is the combined effort of the production house and the site both.

Thus they should make sure whether to let the movie available on site or not, because users are always interested in free stuff online, no matter it is legal or illegal.

Of course, where there is a problem there is (almost) always a solution. In this case, the solution is called VPN (Virtual Private Network). The basic idea of a VPN is that it creates an ecrypted channel between your computer and the VPN server. When you download a file from a torrent site using a VPN, the file goes firstly to the VPN server and from there is redirected to you through the encrypted channel. The ISPs are not able to identify the source and the content of your download.

Using a VPN service while downloading from different sites is a good idea as it protects your real online identity (IP address) and thus, protects you from getting sued. Here is a list of VPN service that allow P2p/Torrent traffic.

Don’t get too excited! VPNs offer good protection, but it does not make the downloads legal!

This post was written by Danny Carpenter, the creator of CheckMyTorrentIp, a great torrent tool. If you are interested in finding more details, you can contact him directly on mytorrentip at gmail.

If you’re a Bittorrent user who subscribes to anonymizing services like VPNs or proxies, how do you verify your IP address is always hidden? If you’re using a web browser to check your Bittorrent IP address, this may leave you exposed in the long run.

CheckMyTorrentIp offers a novel approach to accurately monitoring your IP, it’s a torrent tracker that hands out a legal torrent to each user. Because no one else has your torrent, the CheckMyTorrentIp tracker can monitor and display your Bittorrent IP address directly in your torrent software:

Your IP history is also available on the site and you can expunge your data with a single click:

And since there are 0 seeders, you don’t download anything else, so you can leave the torrent active for as long as you wish.

Why is checking your IP address with a web browser not good enough?

For starters you can’t check your IP continuously all day long, and if you’re using a proxy or firewall, your torrent software may use a different IP address then your browser.

There are various ways your IP address can leak. VPNs all suffer from the same weakness, the connection will drop at some point and this may expose your personal IP address. Unless you’re next to your PC when this happens, you may not even realize this is occurring.

With proxies, they can be incorrectly configured or unknowingly unset, and if you’ve left DHT and UPnP turned on, your personal IP address will leak even if your proxy is configured correctly. Another common way is if you have other people using your PC. They may not be familiar with your setup and inadvertently expose your connection. Yet another way is in firewalls that route torrent traffic through a secure connection. The configuration can be faulty or become unset. Bugs in torrent software and public/private P2P networks can also play a role in exposing your IP address.

About CheckMyTorrentIp.com

The FAQ on CheckMyTorrentIp.com outlines in detail the items above and covers steps you can take to resolve them.

I created CheckMyTorrentIp after my best friend kept asking me to debug his VPN setup. After realizing there didn’t exist a service like this, I slapped together some code and put it online. When it comes to privacy, I believe anything below 100% protection is as good as no protection and I thank how-to-hide-ip.info for allowing me to disseminate this helpful tool to a larger audience.

Anomos is a peer-to-peer file sharing system derived from BitTorrent which is capable of protecting its user’s identities by means of an advanced, planned mix network. It is based on the peer/tracker concept of BitTorrent in combination with an onion routing anonymization layer, with the added benefit of end-to-end encryption.

By combining these technologies, Anomos uses a platform where by no party outside of the trusted tracker will have any information about who a peer is or what they are downloading.

Anomos Features

File transfers are anonymous. After being sent, packets are routed through a number of intermediary nodes before reaching their final destination.

Downloading with Anomos is decentralized — the downloader receives parts of the requested file from a number of different sources, similar to how BitTorrent functions.

Connections within Anomos are End-To-End encrypted.

Communication with the Tracker is also encrypted.

Like many BitTorrent systems Anomos relies on a centralized Tracker server to initiate downloads. If you want to find out how exactly Anomos works you should read the explanations from Anomos blog.

To sum up, Anomos is a very basic anonymous BitTorrent client. Nobody except the central tracker will be able to know who’s downloading what. Ideal tool for anonymous downloading.

Update 4/15/2011: BitBlinder is no longer available anymore. You should check other hide ip tools.

This week, at Pittsburgh-based startup incubator AlphaLab, InnomiNet has presented BitBlinder, a tool that allows users to anonymously browse the web and transfer files using BitTorrent.

BitBlinder is an free and open source project that mixes your Internet traffic with the traffic of everyone else in the BitBlinder network.

With BitBlinder you can:

Download files quickly and anonymously via BitTorrent.

Browse the web privately and bypass any filters.

Protect your privacy by hiding your IP address.

How BitBlinder Works

BitBlinder creates a network of computer similar to Tor in order to achieve online anonymity. BitBlinder works by having a peer in the network acting as a proxy for you. Instead of requesting a page from the website itself, BitBlinder asks the peer to get the page and send it back to you. The connection is encrypted so nobody will be able to see or know the you visited a website.

Using BitBlinder to drive traffic through multiple peers

BitBlinder Installation and Setup

Firstly, you have to download the 17.5 MB setup. After the installation you’ll be prompted with the below screen asking for a username and password.

In order to be able to use BitBlinder you have to join the network. This way, while others will use your computer as proxy, you’ll be able to use their computers to hide your online activity.

Next step is to create an account here. Then enter the username and password and login.

You can use BitBlinder to anonymize your downloads (BitTorrent tab) or for anonymous browsing (Browser tab).

In order to browse anonymously Launch Anonymous Browser. This is a Firefox browser that uses the BitBlinder network and drives your traffic through different peers.

InnomiNet Interview about BitBlinder

Jia Ji interviewed the founders of InnomiNet about BitBlinder during the 2009 Innovation Works annual meeting. Here is the video that explains what is BitBlinder:

According to Torrent freak you can anonymize your activities and BitTorrent tranfers by connecting through BTGuard. BTGuard is a proxy services that acts as an intermediate between you and BitTorrents servers. It reroutes all your BitTorrent traffic through servers in Canada. This means that anyone who connects to you via BitTorrent, will see BTGuard’s IP, and not yours.

BTGuard is a paid service. For $6.95 a month you can use BTGuard to hide your IP address from other downloaders and from your ISP.

BTGuard works differently then some other similar services as it does not VPN your entire Internet connection. You simply configure your BitTorrent client to route through their servers, so it will only effect your BitTorrent downloads.

To sum up, BTGuard seems to be the ideal solution to anonymize your transfers through BitTorrent.

Have you used BTGuard? Share your experience with us! Post a comment!
