What is a Kindle Fire?

Kindle Fire is Amazon’s tablets who has an agressive lower price (around $199) compared to an iPad2 or a Samsung Galaxy Tab. It is running Android Gingerbread-based Honeycomb variant of 2.3.

Although people tend to compare the Kindle Fire to iPad, it definitley can’t be compared head-to-head. Amazon’s vice-president clearly stated that the Kindle Fire is mainly for media consumption. By the way, he estimates that if you’re planning to watch a movie on it while you are in a plane (though no Wi-Fi yet), the Kindle Fire will last 7 hours.

Despite this initial warning about comparing, the Kindle actually has the nice features of tablets: it comes with  two-finger multitouch, has a “desktop-class” PDF reader.

On the “lighter” options (they had to accept some tradeoffs so as to get into that $199 price: the Kindle Fire has no camera, only comes with USB connection and its browser comes without plugins.

While the Kindle Fire has mail applications, and even it applications like twitter, facebook or netflix are expected to land on this device, the Kindle is mainly geared for media consumption.

Why would you need a VPN on a Kindle Fire?

Here’s what you need to do to unlock the Kindle app from outside US.

1. Go to Amazon.com and create an account (if you do not have an Amazon account yet).

2. Go to Manage your Kindle page and click the Country Settings at the left bottom corner.

3. Change the country selection to United States.

4. Change the address to a US-based address. If you need the Amazon account only for purchasing and downloading ebooks (and not buying physical products), it is better to make this change. Just Google for “usa address” and you will find plenty of online services that can provide you with a free US-based address.

5. Next, register your credit card details. It doesn’t have to be a US-based credit card, as long as it is valid.

6. You should now be able to purchase and download ebooks from Kindle store.

Important! When you are purchasing ebooks, make sure you connect to the Kindle app store using a US VPN service, as Amazon checks the location of the IP address.

Some of our readers would wonder why should they care about this new release. Especially those who are addicted to iTunes. Well, I wouldn’t get into the flaming about Apple vs. Google, but I think there are lots of useful features that are worth mentioning.

Google Music allows you to host 20000 of your songs on it so that you can stream them to your Android devices. Well, apart from the high number of songs you can host, I guess there are lots of other alternatives that can perform well too.

But as most online music provider, it comes integrated with the Android Market so that you can buy songs from it. The nice thing is that you have a 90 seconds preview before buying it. From the news, major labels has joined Google+ to get their music distributed through this channel. Google is a late-comer to this game compared to Apple and Amazon, but it comes out with a very interesting feature – at least, I think it’s a very radical change in this field: Google Music allows people to share full-length music to their circles – I don’t know how they deal with copyright infringement for that, but anyway, given that each user can host 200 000 music on his account, imagine how big the database can be. Moreover, rumor has it that Google Music will give one music for free everyday – while this is a great opportunity for labels to promote their artists (I guess labels would have to pay to get their bands distributed for free on Google Music), this definitely is a great music discovery tool.

The Google Music store, however, hasn’t convinced yet all the major labels, even though it claims it’ll offer 13 million songs to its database. But I guess it’ll be just a matter of time before the other major label join the bandwagon. I also expect that most indie labels would play the pioneers in this field so as to get more exposure amongst the millions of Android users in the US (let’s not forget that Android devices retains the biggest market share in the smartphone industry, far ahead of Apple).

Well, enough keeping you envying about how you can access this Google Music if you are not based in the U.S where google Music has just launched. I can see you wondering, how to do it. The solution is common: use a VPN. So, lately, the guys from CyberGhost told us they have a new free Proxy and that we should check them out- which we did. So here are our impressions:

CyberGhost’s free proxy is a web-based proxy. This means that as an internet user, I don’t expect to install any software on my computer so as to be able to use it. But with the word free service, I always expect a lot of advertisements (they should be paid in one way or another, aren’t they?)

So I pointed my browser to the proxy server, then, along with the field for entering the URL of the website I want to reach (I chose BBC iPlayer- we all know that BBC UK iplayer isn’t available in my country). But something just got me wondering: there are some options that can be ticked on or off as you can see from the screenshot below

I just didn’t want to have a headache wondering why I would need to untick those checkboxes, so I left them ticked (my view is simple: most regular users wouldn’t even care about these options, unless they want to go the “advanced mode” way).

Ok, back to BBC iPlayer : the issue was simple: the list of proxy servers does not contain UK country: we have Germany, Netherlands, Russia and Ukraine.  I chose the Ukraine-based proxy and inserted BBC iPlayer into the Free Proxy. The good thing is that at least, I didn’t see a lot of pop-up showing-up here and then. But the advertisement takes 1/3 top of the browsing window, so you have to scroll down to see the actual website you are trying to see. And guess what?  As expected, I couldn’t watch BBC iPlayer. But anyway, I guess it would work for any country-based limited online service that fall into the list of countries aforementioned. Not sure yet. If anyone has a service that would fit into this criterion, feel free to mention it so that I can test.

But for the heck of testing, I browsed whatismyipaddress.com from the free proxy, and it actually reports me with a Ukraine-based IP address. So at least, I know that the IP address sent to webservers that I reach through this Proxy server isn’t my actual IP address.  I played a bit changing the country of the proxy, and Whatismyipaddress.com actually reported the right country. Moreover, by using the “Audit My PC anonymous surfing”, the basic results I received when using the free proxy is satisfying: it doesn’t show my actual GPS location, nor my actual country and IP address.

From what I’ve seen, this Free proxy actually works for changing my IP address, and it is not so cluttered as do other free proxies. However, the limited list of countries where they provide Proxy is a shortcoming so far.
